Ree Drummond, the author of 4 outstanding cookbooks, Star of the
Food Network series and award winning website “The Pioneer Woman”
which showcases her cooking. Photographs and anecdotes about country
life. Each cookbook is a joy to read even if you aren’t going to do
any cooking. In 2011 William Morrow Publishers released “High Heels
to Tractor Wheels’ written by Ree. It’s a biography and love story
of how she became an “accidental country girl”. She pulls no punches
in her tale of how she met her husband and now lives on a cattle
ranch in Oklahoma with her husband, children, horses, cows and pups.
It is a funny, moving, and really good read. Stop in and check it

Lee Burke. He lives in Iberia Louisiana and Missoula Montana. The
bulk of his work has centered around a character named Robicheaux,
who is a sheriff’s deputy. All his books have fascinating titles
such as “Cadillac Jukebox, The Tin Roof Blowndown” and Dixie City
Jam. I have always loved books with unusual titles and my first
reading of “Cadillac Jukebox”. Some pages into the book was
mentioned De Queen, AR and an experience at the old Corley Grocery
that stood on the Southwest corner of Hwy 41 and Stilwell. I have
been a fan of his since. His latest release will be on the shelf

Their only hope lies in the ancient Afghan custom of bacha posh,
which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a son until she
is of marriageable age. As a boy, she has the kind of freedom that

family of a local resident. It consists of 24 volumes of history of
the American frontier. It’s opening up and settlement of the old
west was one of history’s real-live dramas.
The setting itself is overwhelming: vast, sever, wondrously
beautiful and brutally demanding. It promised both paradise and pain
to those who came searching for its riches. From Indians who lived
in harmony with the wilderness to the firs trappers, gunfighters,
cowboys, sodbusters, railroad builders and pioneer school teachers.
The old west’s places and characters can be found in the beautifully
leather bound books with a master index published by time-life will
be the spotlight for the month of March.

proud to say that I have 11 of the 15 listed best sellers, not bad
for a branch library. The credit goes to the board of the Tri-County
Regional Library System. Thanks so much for all your good work.

Movie January 14, 2017 @ 10 am. We will be watching "Finding Dory"
so swim on in.
The Library will be closed

Author of the month for January
is Arkansas writer Charlaine Harris. Harris is an American
bestselling author who has been writing mysteries for thirty years.
She was born and raised in the Mississippi River Delta area
of the United States. She now lives in southern Arkansas with her
husband and three children. Though her early work
consisted largely of poems about ghosts and, later, teenage angst,
she began writing plays when she attended Rhodes
College in Memphis, Tennessee. She began to write books a few years
later. Her later books have been in the urban fantasy genre. She is
best known for The Southern Vampire Mysteries series, (also
known as Sookie Stackhouse Series) which HBO later adapted for its
dramatic series entitled True Blood.
"Adult Activities is every
Wednesday at 10 am. Lots of Coloring, games and more! Come in and
see what new things we will have in the new year!
Joan at the Horatio Library
would like to thank all the patrons of Horatio Library for your
friendship and support over the past year. You make my job easier
and I hope that I have brightened your days. I look forward to 2017
and lots of fun, laughter, and tears with all of you and I wish all
of you a happy and prosperous New Year.
Our spotlight for January is
going to focus on the art work of the late James Klyne Underwood, a
1953 graduate of Horatio High School and graduate of University of
Arkansas. He was a brilliant artist and the bulk of his black and
white ink drawings was of the region.
Two books of his artwork were
published by his brother and donated to a local resident. It will be
on display for the month of January, so come join us.
The education process does not
suddenly begin when a child reaches the age of five and enters
kindergarten and at the Lockesburg Library we are planning to expand
our preschool programs in the new year. Ms. Wendy at the Lockesburg
Library has already added to its homeschooling section with new
"how-to" homeschool books for parents and the "Letter of the Week"
program. Plans are being made for a "Mommy and Me at the Library" on
every other Thursday at 2pm beginning January 28th.
The Gillham Library received
books and magazines from Dianne Rosson. The book "My Very Good, Very
Bad Cat by Amy Newmark, has 101 true stories which are perfect for
reading out loud to the family. They are guaranteed to keep a smile
on your face! Check it out Tuesday and Thursday 9-5 or Saturday 9-2

Wednesdays at 10 am at the De Queen Library is “Adult Activities.
Lots of Coloring, games and more!
Joan at the Horatio Library says Here it is Christmas time again!
Don’t forget the reason for Christmas, is not to receive but to
give. Remember the gifts of the 3 wise men? Be like them. Look until
you find someone in need and give from your heart. Don’t tell anyone
else, the 3 wise men certainly didn’t tell King Herod.
In fact, if you haven’t already given, Horatio Library is
participating in the Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive, there
is a donation box at the front desk and it isn’t yet running over,
in fact I’ll be glad to get another box!
On December 17th there will be a story time at 10:30am. All children
3-8 years are invited. There will be stories, songs and maybe if
you’ve been nice and not naughty there will be some special gift
from Mrs. Santa. So bring a friend and come join the party. This
month’s spotlight has to be on Christmas, so come by at night and
see the beautiful trees at the Horatio Library.
Season Greeting from Lockesburg Library! The last book club
discussion of the year will be December 3rd at 10:00 am. We will
discuss “Mrs. Poe” by Lynn Cullen. There will be hot tea and finger
foods served for patrons during this time. “A Pirates Night Before

December 22nd at 3:00 pm. American sign language for letters of the
alphabet are added to our “Letter of the Week” program for

Library November 2nd at 4:00 pm for the kickoff story time of the

show Clifford how generous our community is.
November 1st – 31st is Food for Fines at all Sevier County
Libraries.
Food for Fines is a way to help local patrons and local food banks.
Bring any nonperishable food item into the library for a one-dollar
reduction per item in existing overdue fines. Food is accepted for
fines on returned library materials only, not for replacement of
lost or damaged items. And of course All donations are accepted.
The De Queen Library will have a little something special this year
through the end of the year. Every Tuesday through Friday from dark
- 9:00 pm there will be a display of interesting things in the 2nd
street windows. Drive by and see what will be going on.
Don’t forget Wednesdays at 10 am at the De Queen Library is “Adult
Activities. Lots of Coloring, games and more!
Joan at the Horatio Library says Many thanks to Tri-County Regional
Library System for their support. It has made possible the purchase
of a wonderful piece of art for the “Kiddie Korner” section of the
library. It is a statue of a boy reading and a girl pointing out the
words for him. It really adds to that part of the library and
believe that children and adults will enjoy for years to come!
It’s that time of year to count our blessings and one of mine is
being part of the Sevier County Library System and for those many
patrons and strangers I have met and friends I’ve made. So in
keeping with that theme, the spotlight this month will be on the
“Kiddie Korner” and juvenile books about Thanksgiving!
Also there are new books on the way and book sale of duplicates that
have been donated. Happy Thanksgiving!
The Lockesburg Library's book club discussion on the book “Far from
the Madding Crowd” by Tomas Hardy will be on Saturday, November 12,
at 10:00 am. Popcorn and coloring –it’s not just for kids anymore.

alphabet. If you are interested in being a part of this new program
call Mz. Wendy at 289-2233.

beginning November 1st so bring in gently worn items.
We have not set a date for the Nov. Crafts for Kids. We will
announce that a little later in the month. You can call me Susie at
the Gillham Library for more information 386-5665
October 2016
Our “Adult coloring” at the De Queen Branch has become “Adult
Activities” with games, cards, bingo and coloring, Wednesdays at 10
am. It is really relaxing, especially visiting with folks. So while
the kids and grandkids are in school come on out at join in the fun.
Happy Halloween from the De Queen Library. In celebration of
All Hallows’ Eve we will be having a spooky good story October 26,
2016 and the first 30 children will receive a free plastic pumpkin,
a book, and a snack. Carolyn will be reading about the lady who
wasn’t afraid of anything.
October 31st is Books for Treats Day. Giving books instead of candy
shows kids you care about them and are encouraging them to read.
This not only helps raise their interest in reading, but raises
their feeling that the community cares about their future. Literacy
is key to success in today's society. Book reading encourages
curiosity, imagination and life-long learning.
Joan at the Horatio Library says look up the definition of
“Library” in any dictionary and it is “A place in which to store
literary and artistic materials such as, books periodicals,
newspapers, pamphlets, and prints are kept for reference reading.”
Today, Libraries have progressed beyond that definition, not only
printed materials but DVD’S, Audio books, public computers with free
internet access, copiers, faxes and even voter registration forms.
Personally, my favorite is still books. A good book with a story
line that is well written, a plot that twists and turns, and a
bookmark that says “Don’t bug me, I’m Reading” and I am good for the
rest of the day.
October spotlight will be n author Sandra Brown. Her new book
“Sting” and other thrillers. She is a very predictable writer but
when she decides to write a serious thriller she always does a good
job. Among my favorites are “Fat Tuesday”, “Friction”, “Mean Streak”
and many others. So come in and check out the Horatio Library, A
place where printed materials are kept for reference and reading.
The Lockesburg Library's book club discussion on the book “In
the Garden of Beasts” by Erik Larson will be on Saturday, October 8
at 10:00 AM. The library is now providing “Letter of the Week”
packets for toddler and preschool age kids who are working through
the alphabet. If you are interested in being a part of this new
program Call Mz. Wendy at 289-2233. A children’s story time
featuring the book “Room on the Broom” will be October 15th at 10:00
AM.
Susie at the Gillham Library will be hosting Crafts for Kids
Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the new time of 12:30. Dianne Rosson
of the Extension Homemakers Club is sponsoring the class.
She will be reading a story before the crafts. We received as a
donation the complete set of Twilight Saga DVD’s from patron Alicia
Helms of Gillham. For more information call 386-5665
