ASHDOWN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATHLETE NAMED

GATORADE ARKANSAS BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CHICAGO (May 29, 2018) — In its 33rd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, today announced Jaden Hill of Ashdown High School as its 2017-18 Gatorade Arkansas Baseball Player of the Year. Hill is the second Gatorade Arkansas Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Ashdown High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Hill as Arkansas’ best high school baseball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year, Hill joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo High School, Mich.), Jon Lester (2001-02, Bellarmine Preparatory School, Wash.), David Price (2003-04, Blackman High School, Tenn.), Clayton Kershaw (2005-06, Highland Park High School, Texas), Rick Porcello (2006-2007, Seaton Hall Preparatory School, N.J.) and Kris Bryant (2009-10, Bonanza High School, Nev.).

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior right-handed pitcher and infielder posted a 7-0 record on the mound with a 0.51 ERA this past season, leading the Panthers (26-10) to the Class 4A state quarterfinals. Hill struck out 85 batters while allowing just 20 hits and 12 walks in 41 innings pitched. He also batted .540 (40-for-87) with 11 home runs, 43 RBIs, 35 runs and a 1.034 slugging percentage. Rated as the No. 1 recruit in Arkansas for the Class of 2018 by Perfect Game and the Prep Baseball Report, he played in the 2017 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field.

A two-sport standout who also was a top football recruit as a quarterback, Hill has volunteered locally by mentoring local youth through the Ashdown United Methodist Church in addition to donating his time to the church’s food pantry. He has also served as a motivational speaker for students at a local elementary school.

“Jaden is an incredible athlete and baseball player,” said Josh Wesson, head coach at Fountain Lake High. “He pitched against our club and was impressive … On top of pitching a gem, he was just as impressive at the plate.”

Hill has maintained a weighted 3.66 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball on scholarship at Louisiana State University this fall, but is projected as an early-round selection in June’s Major League Baseball draft.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
Hill joins recent Gatorade Arkansas Baseball Players of the Year Casey Martin (2016-17, Lonoke High School), Evan Lee (2015-16, Bryant High School), Andy Pagnozzi (2014-15, Fayetteville High School), Trevor Ezell (2013-14, Bryant High School), Carson Shaddy (2012-13, Fayetteville High School), Trey Killian (2011-12, Mountain Home High School), Dillon Howard (2010–11, Searcy High School), Brandon Moore (2009-10, Van Buren), D.J. Baxendale (2008–09, Sylvan Hills), Tyler Wilson (2007-08, Greenwood), and Scott Sammons (2006-07, Searcy) among the state’s list of former award winners.

As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Jaden will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program. Every Gatorade Player of the Year state winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate and will have the opportunity to enter for an additional $10,000 spotlight grant by writing a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support. 12 spotlight grants – one for each sport – will be announced throughout the year.

Brandon Burlsworth Football Camps Coming In June

HARRISON – With the August 2016 release of the movie GREATER, people from all across the country have been inspired by the story of Brandon Burlsworth. And now entering it’s eighteenth year, the Brandon Burlsworth Football Camps give young people the opportunity to learn the game from Burlsworth’s teammates and many other former Razorback stars.

The football camp dates are June 1st in Harrison at F.S. Garrison Stadium and June 2nd in Little Rock at War Memorial Stadium. These camps will feature many former Razorback football greats such as Anthony Lucas, Joe Dean Davenport and Ron Calcagni.

Burlsworth’s high school coach Tommy Tice is the coordinator of these camps that are open to students who will be entering the 3rd through 9th grade next school year.

The camps are a great experience for the very young athlete as well as the more experienced junior high player. The younger campers will learn proper technique, which is very important, but also learn that football is a game and should be fun. In the older age groups the instruction will intensify in all phases of the game with each camper receiving more advance technique training.

The fee for the camp is $35.00 for pre-registered campers and $45.00 for day of camp registration. Deadline for pre-registration is May 25th. Registration is available on the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation web site at brandonburlsworth.org. All proceeds go directly to the foundation’s programs for underprivileged children. -more-

Businesses and individuals can also sponsor children who cannot afford to attend on their own. Since these children are the primary focus of the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation, sponsorships are greatly encouraged. You may sponsor children on the foundation website or call 870-741-1443 for more information.

Campers will need to furnish their own workout clothing, including shoes or cleats, shorts and t-shirt. This is a non-contact camp and no pads or helmets will be worn. Each camp will begin at 8:30am and will conclude with an autograph session at 12:30pm.

For questions regarding the camps, log-on the web site at brandonburlsworth.org or you may call 866-534-2875.

Participating Razorback Players: Chad Abernathy, Seth Armbrust, Mitchell Bailey, David Bazzel, D’Andre Berry, Freddy Burton, Richie Butler, Ron Calcagni, Grant Cook, Joe Dean Davenport, Grant Garrett, Wade Grayson, Price Holmes, James Johnson, Bo Lacy, Anthony Lucas, Jonathan Luigs, Clarke Moore, Dahrron Moss, Nathan Norman, Mitch Petrus, Kenny Sandlin, Michael Snowden and Austin Tate.

Ashdown @ Cossatot River 02/05/18

The Pantherettes were victorious Friday evening over the Lady Eagles in what was a spoiled Homecoming night for the host team.

The Pantherettes opened up an 8 to 1 lead to start the game but the Lady Eagles came back, and the two teams swapped leads throughout the 2nd quarter before the end of the 1st half coming to an end with a 20-20 tie.

In the 2nd half the Lady Eagles built up to a 6-point lead which they would hold onto throughout the 3rd quarter, but in the 4th quarter the Pantherettes began chipping away at the lead and finally tied the game at 40 with 6.7 seconds left in the game.

Cambrey McCullough took what looked to be the last shot of regulation from three-point range with 3.2 seconds left in the game and missed but Adaysiah Thompson fought for the rebound and put up a prayer off the glass.  As the siren sounded and time officially expired the ball dropped through the net and the Pantherettes pulled off the heart stopping victory 44-42 over the Lady Eagles.

For the Lady Eagles,  Jade Richardson led all scorers with (12) followed by Ashlen Gonzalez with (11), and Regan Richardson with (8).

For the victorious Pantherettes, Adaysiah Thompson had (26) followed by (6) points by Cambrey McCullough, and (5) points a piece by Zakiah Rhone and Kenya Wilson.

The excitement wasn’t over as in the nightcap game the Eagles came out determined to not let homecoming be completely spoiled and fought their way to a 44-41 victory over the Ashdown Panthers.

Ashdown opened up a 6-point lead early in the game and looked like they were going to cruise to a victory but The Eagles came storming back in the 2nd quarter and took a 2-point lead into half time 21-19.

In the 2nd half the Eagles built their own 6-point lead only to see it disappear to a 40-40 tie in late in the fourth, and it looked eerily similar too the Sr. Girls contest.  However, the Eagles battled and Sophomore Center Coy Frachiseur stepped up with some huge plays to end the game blocking and causing turnovers.

After a free-throw by Garrett Watkins gave the Eagles a 41-40 lead Ashdown came down the court and Lamar Wilkerson drove the left side of the lane to give them the lead, but Coy Frachiseur came up huge blocking the shot and taking possession and then taking the foul.  Frachiseur then iced the game with 1.9 seconds left on the clock by hitting both free-throws and giving the eagles the final lead 44-41.

Ashdown tried a desperation full-court 3-point shot that came up short and The Eagles saved homecoming night with heart stopping victory.

For the Panthers, Kaiden Hunter led the scoring with (11), followed by Jimmy Dunn, Lamar Wilkerson and John Smith with (6) each.

For the Eagles,  Coy Frachiseur led the scoring with (15) followed by (13) by Cody Brown and (6) points a piece by Brayden Smith and Trenton Rosson.

2017 Rotary Cup Awarded to Hunter Earney

The presentation of the Rotary Cup has been a De Queen Leopards football tradition since 1936. At Monday’s noon meeting of the Club, “The Voice of the Leopards” Jay Bunyard presented the 2017 award to tailback and outside linebacker Hunter Earney.

Earney was named to the 2017 Class 5A All State Team as he rushed for 1,388 yards and 17 touchdowns on 202 carries. He’s the first Leopard to top the thousand yard rushing mark since 2011. Defensively, Earney recorded 55 tackles, and had a key interception return for a touchdown against Nashville. In the 49-42 upset win over the Scrappers, Earney also rushed for 292 yards and four touchdowns.

Earney was a member of the 2017 track team that won a state championship. He was all-conference in baseball, and he’s a member of this year’s Leopard basketball team.

Earney, the son of Chad and Chayla Earney, also excels in the classroom. He has a grade point average of 3.70, and he’s a member of the National Honor Society.

Bunyard says the award is based on four criteria: involvement in other sports and school activities; character and leadership; scholastic achievements; and performance on the football field.

After graduation in May, Earney plans to attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and major in accounting.
